The Crossing

Long-term rehabilitation, post-graduate program, family housing

With the purchase of The Crossing, a former hotel located at Smith and Kearney, we have significantly increased our capacity to impact more lives than ever before.

After obtaining this new property, it was clear there was much work to be done. We have already brought this dilapidated building a long way. These changes are evident in our miniature amphitheatre, basketball and volleyball courts, barbecue grill, and new grass!

Although these changes are substantial, the real difference is in the changes made to the inside of the building. Restored living quarters have become transitional housing for homeless families and New Life Program participants. Mission interns and visitors are housed here, at the heart of our New Life and Family Services programs.

NEW LIFE PROGRAM
Most visibly, the New Life program for homeless men, formerly housed in the Lawrence Street facility, is relocating and expanding. The Crossing is a former hotel, well-suited to transitional
residence. Now up to 126 men who desire to change their lives can enter the program.
As a result of the changes made in moving the New Life Program, the Lawrence Street facility has been able to expand significantly providing more emergency shelter for homeless men.

NEW LIFE POST-GRADUATE PROGRAM
Men who have graduated from the New Life Program and choose to continue in the Post-Graduate Program can also live at The Crossing. Transitional housing is an essential part of the program as these men re-enter mainstream society.

FAMILY SERVICES
The Crossing is the new home for Family Services. Family Services is comprised of Family and Senior Homeless Initiative (FSHI), Strategic Transitional Assistance & Response (STAR), Family Refugee Services (FRS), and Family Rescue Ministry (FRM). On-site transitional housing will increase the number of families we can serve and improve our service to them.

INTERNS AND VISITORS
We accept more than 80 student and professional interns every year—many of them from distant places. For these people and other guests from ministries around the world who have come to
observe, we can now offer living quarters that place them at the center of the work we do.

Big Changes

Much of The Crossing is in good repair, but to serve homeless families and New Life residents recovering from street life we have refurbished, renovated, and reconstructed portions of the property. Some changes include:

  • Expanding the kitchen and dining room
  • Setting up a six-room computer-equipped
    LifeSkills, Education & Career Center
  • Creating office space for Mission staff
  • Building a miniature amphitheatre for outdoor
    devotions & community events
  • Installing volleyball and basketball courts, a
barbeque pit, and grassy commons on what was once
    an asphalt parking lot
